Return of the Scoundrel
by Randy Guiles
Since Disney’s acquisition of the Star Wars brand every fan knew there would be a huge expansion of the universe based on what everyone saw with Marvel. One of the ways Disney decided to expand upon the universe was through Marvel itself. We have seen a slew of comic mini-series come out over the past few years ranging from Darth Vader to Kanan Jarrus. In June one of the most beloved Star Wars characters finally got his time to shine in comic form, Han Solo.
The Han Solo comic run will last five issues and be released monthly. Written by award winning Marjorie Liu (Monstress, The Mortal Bone, Astonishing X-Men) with the artwork done by world class comic artist Mark Brooks (Marvel Age, Cable & Deadpool, Ultimate X-Men) the series takes place between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.
Quick synopsis for Issue #1: Han is given a mission from Leia as he tries to find his place in the Rebellion, and the galaxy after the destruction of the Death Star. His loyalty to the Rebellion is tested when he is entered into the most dangerous race in the galaxy.
The masterful writing of Liu captures the feel of Star Wars. It is clear she understands the personalities of the characters and takes you back to when you first met them in Episode IV. It didn’t take long to get vested in the main characters. What I am excited to see is the character development throughout the story arc. One of the dynamics I clearly enjoyed is getting to see Han’s inner monologue throughout. The artwork is superb as well. The overall feeling created by it was nostalgic. From the cantinas to the starships, the detail was there. Oh and one more thing to remember about the comic…it’s all canon.
Overall Han Solo #1 did what any good comic should do. It sets the tone for an even bigger story and leaves you wanting more. I will be honest I didn’t want it to end. I wanted to keep reading. Guess I will just have to wait until July 6th to continue the adventure. For now, I will give it a 4/5 as it is just the beginning and there hasn’t been a chance for any real character development. However, what we got for the beginning is great and it is worth picking up. May the Force be with you all. You can purchase Han Solo #1 by visiting Amazon.
