Ahead of the October 2nd premiere of Westworld, HBO has unleashed the bloody new trailer for their remake of the 1973 Michael Crichton classic. In this new trailer, audiences receive a more clear look at the plot as well as the key players. After the first trailer was very cryptic, I didn’t expect for HBO to release something more story driven ahead of the show; I figured mystery would win over plot details. As you can see, I was very wrong. Instead we get a concise character driven preview that aids the mind’s eye to focus beyond just the imagery.
In the new trailer we are introduced to the character played by Evan Rachel Wood, a pleasure-giving android struggling to reconcile the fact that she isn’t really human. The trailer also focuses on Anthony Hopkins’ Dr. Robert Ford, the architect of this farce westworld. He’s somewhat of a mad scientist type with a hint of Hannibal Lecter and John Hammond.
After previous Westworld trailers provided only a mere glimpse of the infamous Gunslinger, played by Yul Brynner in the original film; the latest preview reveals a much longer look at the series’ antagonist. I could not be more pleased with the casting of Ed Harris as the shows main baddie.
Being a fan of the weird west genre, I can’t express my excitement for the possibilities–and not just the possibilities for the show but what this could mean for the western sub-genre itself. Hollywood of late has not been kind with the genre and the oddities of the weird west have left audiences less inclined to be interested in anything that resembles the mesh of genre whether it be sci-fi or fantasy elements mixed with the western. With the upcoming release of The Dark Tower film and HBO’s dip into the genre, could this finally be the time when weird westerns get the respect they deserve?
