Star Wars Rebels: Character Spotlight – Sabine Wren

So far we have talked about some of the main characters in Star Wars Rebels, Ezra and Kanan. Now let’s start to look at some of the ancillary characters. We will first start with the Mandarorian Artist, Sabine Wren.

Sabine was born and raised on the planet Mandalore during the late years of the Clone Wars. She is currently the heir to her clan Wren, which just so happens to be a part of House Vizsla. Her mother was a member of the Death Watch, which was shown during the airing of the Clone Wars series. It is said that her mother was there when Maul took over Death Watch. As she grew, Sabine became a cadet at the Imperial Academy after the Empire had established itself on Mandalore. Once the Empire began to affect her family negatively, she began to regret her decision to join the academy. Eventually Sabine, and fellow cadet Ketsu Onyo, deserted the academy and became bounty hunters together. As time went on Ketsu became too greedy and during a job left Sabine for dead. This experience forced her to create a hardened, sassy demeanor to protect herself. Sabine uses her art as a way of expression but also as a tactic. Being a Mandalorian she is also skilled with many weapons. She is considered the weapons master on the Ghost. Let’s look at a few moments over the past couple seasons that have helped give us an idea of who she is.

Our introduction to Sabine in season one shows her utilizing her artistic talents to paint one of the Tie Fighters that draws the attention of stormtroopers while other members of the Ghost work on completing their mission. As the Stormtroopers attempt to stop her she easily evades them. Once out of their grasp the Stormtroopers here a noise and realize that not only did Sabine put graffiti on the Tie Fighter, but she also planted an explosive on it. The Tie explodes and Sabine disappears into the shadows. This appears to be a theme for Sabine all through season one. Using her blasters, explosives, and making art. Though given the short run for season one you can only do so much with so many characters. One of her first character building moments was during Empire Day. Ezra dealing with the loss of his parents is comforted by Sabine. She gives him an old holodisc she found as a belated birthday present. The disc contains a picture of him when he was younger with his parents. Another act of kindness to Ezra is when she painted a mural in his room for him. Lastly we will look at the most back story we have seen about Sabine. Sabine was forced to come to terms with part of her past as she ran into her old partner, Ketsu Onyo, on a mission to obtain a GNK power droid for the fledgling Rebellion. As it turns out Ketsu is after the droid as well. The Empire begins to hunt them both which leads to them teaming up along with Ezra. This is when we learn more about Sabine and her days as a bounty hunter. As the trio eludes the Empire and ultimately Sabine secures the GNK droid, she forgives Ketsu for the past and offers her a chance to join the Ghost. Ketsu decides against joining and goes on her way. These are but a few moments for Sabine, but ones that shows her character and some growth in the first two seasons of Rebels.

Normally this would be where expectations for season 3 would come in. However at Star Wars Celebration this year there was an interview with Tiya Sircar, the voice of Sabine, and she fills us in on what will happen this season to Sabine. According to Sircar, we will see Sabine finally get her jet-pack. Also part of the story will surround Sabine’s past. For all you Sabine fans out there finally more back story. Finally she let slip that Sabine will begin to wield the Darksaber but left it at that. So looks like we will get more Sabine in season 3 than past seasons. That will do it for now, but next time we will dive into the big Lesat they call Zeb. Until then May the Force be with you all.
