It seems like each generation of consoles needs a refresh to keep things sexy and exciting. Sony following suit in the generational tradition with the PS4 Pro. The refreshed hardware will be much of the same, but with a few key improvements.

First and foremost, the PS4 Pro has over 2 times the processing power, with 4.2 Teraflops (4.2 trillion floating point operations per second) over the standard PS4’s 1.86 TFLOPS. A standard 1 TB hard drive is also included. The size of the Pro is also getting an increase of a few centimeters on all sides, and comes with 1.2 kg of weight.

This is all well and good, but the most exciting is the guaranteed 4k resolution and display features. This will include the 4K display mode and HDR for all games across the consoles release history.

This increase in display and processing power is thought to help PSVR. It should increase the frames per second, which is essential for vomit free VR sessions, but the actual resolution won’t increase as the VR headset has a 1080p display.

With the PS4 Pro video output being 4k, you don’t need a 4k display to get amazing picture. In fact, due to current display technoques (taking 4 pixels in a file, finding the average, then using that average for a single pixel on the display) a 4k resolution video is considered true 1080 when played on an HD display while traditional 1080 is technically 720. This in itself is fantastic. However, bewary because the Pro will not come with a 4k blue ray drive. And unless you have internet speed of 25MBPS, your 4k display capability will be left gathering dust.

Sure these tech specs are all well and good, but what do they mean? Well, long and short of it, not much. Especially since the HDR update will be coming to all existing PS4 consoles making bith HDR and a higher FPS standard.

With a $399USD price point (full $100 higher than the current bundled price of the standard PS4), you might just want to pass on this one and save your cash for something that is more of an improvement.
