There has been lots of talk about whether or not we’d see a Star Trek 4 anytime soon, mostly because of the lackluster performance of Star Trek Beyond at the box office this past summer. The previous Star Trek film, Into Darkness grossed nearly $470 million compared to Beyond, which only grossed $343 million. Needless to say, Paramount was probably not happy with the overall return on such a large investment.

Despite the less than ideal box office return, good news has surfaced earlier this week when Simon Pegg, along with his writing partner, tweeted an image alluding to the fact that the duo has begun writing duties for the next installment.
WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR ABOUT THE NEXT MOVIE
Not much is known about the 4th installment of the rebooted franchise except that Chris Hemsworth is rumored to be reprising his role as James T. Kirk’s father. However, there has been no word on how this will be done since the character died during the movies opening minutes.
I for one am looking forward to seeing how this will all pan out, particularly because I really like how the new Kirk and Spock mythology is finally starting to emerge. Beyond was the first of the new films that managed to stand on it’s own merits and not rely solely on nostalgic wantings of things long passed.
Below is a blurb I had written on my Facebook page after I had viewed Star Trek Beyond back in July.
So Star Trek Beyond in a nutshell…
Pros: Much better story than ‘Into Darkness’, as a result of the split timeline and the previous two films a unique Kirk and Spock mythos has finally emerged (which will continue into the 4th movie according to recent rumors) and some fairly amazing and imaginative scenes were executed during the numerous action sequences.
Cons: Say what you want about J.J. Abrams but the man knows how to deliver a high quality picture and with Justin Lin taking the reins, you can see an obvious shift in overall production quality i.e. VFX was a big one; numerous scenes were just plain awful and cheap when compared to what J.J. delivered with the previous two installments.
The new franchise is just getting started.
