The Grand Admiral’s Origins Will Be Revealed In Star Wars: Thrawn
Since the Disney buyout of Lucasfilm, many fans have been waiting patiently to see their favorite characters that were retconned brought back into the universe. One of the most anticipated had been the Grand Admiral himself. Since his glorious return to canon by way of his pivotal role in the current season of Star Wars Rebels, many fans have been waiting for the announced novel that officially re-introduces the mysterious Grand Admiral and his backstory. Now, last week we finally received a glimpse into the story itself. Below is the synopsis taken from ComicBook.com.
“After Thrawn is rescued from exile by Imperial soldiers, his deadly ingenuity and keen tactical abilities swiftly capture the attention of Emperor Palpatine. And just as quickly, Thrawn proves to be as indispensable to the Empire as he is ambitious; as devoted as its most loyal servant, Darth Vader; and a brilliant warrior never to be underestimated. On missions to rout smugglers, snare spies, and defeat pirates, he triumphs time and again—even as his renegade methods infuriate superiors while inspiring ever greater admiration from the Empire. As one promotion follows another in his rapid ascension to greater power, he schools his trusted aide, Ensign Eli Vanto, in the arts of combat and leadership, and the secrets of claiming victory. But even though Thrawn dominates the battlefield, he has much to learn in the arena of politics where ruthless administrator Arihnda Pryce holds the power to be a potent ally or a brutal enemy.

Based on the synopsis, it does look like there will be several differences from the previous reconnected continuity. For example, Thrawn became an exile from his people because he destroyed the Jedi expedition ship known as Outbound Flight at the behest of Palpatine.
Personally, I don’t mind the changes. I’ve long accepted that the original EU has changed forever and I’m okay with that.
Timothy Zahn, the author that created Thrawn more than two decades ago, has suggested that there will be some Easter Eggs and references regarding his earlier Thrawn stories. Star Wars: Thrawn is scheduled to released on April 11.
