Star Trek Discovery Episode Breakdown ‘Choose Your Pain’
Star Trek: From the Holodeck is a fan broadcast dedicated to breaking down, analyzing and discussing Star Trek Discovery.
This week Mike and Dave discuss and breakdown Star Trek Discovery 01×05 ‘Choose Your Pain’. Okay– so, in this week’s episode the writers chose to sideline Burnham. This allowed the story to focus a bit more on the side players and it worked great.
The focus was Saru and Lorca, which helped in developing their arcs. They didn’t lift the veil completely for Lorca, which is good. It’s far too soon to fully reveal what he’s about. However, they did give just enough for us to be intrigued. Similarly, Saru was shifted from writing device (trifecta of brilliance) to front and center — exploring not only his issue with Burnham but also making him more grounded and relatable.
