Critique Revolve: ‘The Last Vermeer’ [Review]

The Last Vermeer succeeds where it wants to and Guy Pearce’s performance is more than enough to iron out any inconsistencies

Welcome to Critique Revolve! In this episode, the hosts review and discuss The Last Vermeer

Synopsis: An artist is suspected of selling a valuable painting to the Nazis, but there is more to the story than meets the eye.

The Last Vermeer (originally titled Lyrebird) is a 2019 American drama film directed by Dan Friedkin from a screenplay by John Orloff (under the pen name James McGee), Mark Fergus, and Hawk Ostby. It is based on the 2008 book The Man Who Made Vermeers by Jonathan Lopez, and tells the story of Han van Meegeren (played by Guy Pearce), an art forger who swindles millions of dollars from the Nazis, alongside Dutch Resistance fighter Joseph Piller (Claes Bang).
