Michelle Yeoh is getting a Star Trek spinoff about Section 31
2019 is shaping up to be the biggest and best year for Star Trek news in decades. Just a few months back, executive producer Alex Kurtzman announced a complete market saturation with a new Star Trek series centered around Captain Picard and Discovery’s second season leading the charge. Now, just when we didn’t think it could get any better, CBS All Access announced earlier today that they have greenlit another Star Trek spinoff series. This one will focus on Michelle Yeoh’s character from Discovery and Starfleet’s CIA-type secret organization known as Section 31.

The show will be written by Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt; both of which currently write for Star Trek Discovery and have written an episode of Star Trek Short Treks.
The show’s executive producer, Alex Kurtzman stated, “Michelle has shattered ceilings, broken boundaries, and astonished us with her grace and gravitas for decades. As a human, I adore her. As an actor, I revere her, and—Erika and Bo are remarkable, exciting writers who bring a fresh perspective to the world of Star Trek, and we’re all thrilled to explore the next wild chapter in the life of Captain Philippa Georgiou.”

During the first season of Discovery, Michelle Yeoh’s Philippa Georgiou was introduced as the captain of the USS Shenzhou and was quickly killed off to only return as her mirror universe doppelganger later in the season. So it’s safe to assume that the new show will be centered around the former emperor of the Terran Empire.
Interestingly, MU Georgiou’s induction into Section 31 was teased in a deleted scene from the finale of Discovery Season 1. This bonus scene shows Georgiou being handed a black Starfleet badge by Leland as a welcome into the organization.
For those of you not in the know, Section 31 was originally introduced in Deep Space Nine as a secret division that works behind the scenes doing the Federation’s dirty work in order to maintain the peaceful front of the United Federation of Planets.
Along with Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth will serve as executive producers for the show, while Aaron Baiers will co-executive produce along with Kim. Star Trek: Discovery returns for its second season Thursday.
